Meet Our Director

Carla Jordan

 

Carla joined the museum team in 2005.

She is the owner of CL Jordan Preservation in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Carla has a degree in Historic Preservation with an emphasis in public history.

She enjoys her contract work in Kansas on
Historic Route 66 and her ongoing research of the Saxon Lutheran immigration to Missouri in 1839.

               Museum Development and Administration Experience 

March 2005-Present: Director of the Lutheran Heritage Center & Museum, Altenburg, MO

 Directing the development of a new museum complex, the adjoining National Register of Historic Places sites, and the cataloging and restoration of the historic museum complex, including:  program development, mission statement development, artifact/archival cataloging, exhibit design, exhibit development, interpretation development and implementation, volunteer/staff recruitment and training, collection stabilization, promotion, and fund raising.

September 2005-Present:  Neutral Lands Cherokee Heritage Center

Grant Writer

Serving as program development consultant for the counsel in order to research federal, state, and local funding sources to repair the headquarters building, to develop the food panty, and to continue development of the thrift store and cultural activities.

May 2006-Present:  East Perry County Cultural Alliance (EPCCA)

Founder

The EPCCA was designed to create a flow of communication and promotion of the historic sites in East Perry County, Missouri.  The EPCCA partners with regional business to promote the rich cultural heritage of the region.  Founding the organization included development of articles of incorporation, obtaining not-for-profit status, board of directors recruitment, and continued program development.

An adaptive reuse of the historic Phillips 66 Station on Kansas Route 66.  The structure will house the Kansas Route 66 Welcome Center.  Member of project administration team.  Funding:  Baxter Springs Heritage Center & Museum/National Parks Service

Historic Brush Creek Bridge, Kansas Route 66

2005-2006

Restoration of the last March-Arch style bridge on Historic Route 66.  Project administrator.  Funding:  National Parks Service/Local Match

Nyle H. Miller Award, 2004

            Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation.  Awarded by the Kansas State Historical Society, to the Baxter Springs, Kansas Heritage Center and Museum, for a project directed by Carla Jordan.  The project was archiving a historic lead and zinc mining collection.

 Outstanding Graduate Award, 2005

            Presented by Southeast Missouri State University.  Nominated by Dr. Steven Hoffman, Coordinator of the Historic Preservation Program, SEMO.

Archival and Exhibit Experience

2005-Present:  Lutheran Heritage Center & Museum

Exhibit designer and coordinator of the exhibits team.  Implemented over forty new exhibits including research, design, and implementation.  Coordinates exhibit rotation, traveling exhibits, and continued exhibit development.

 2004-Present:  WESTRAY Foundation

Serve as foundation archivist including scheduling and processing of historic documentation photography including:  archiving the photographic documentation of the construction of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; the demolition of the Cape Girardeau, Missouri Traffic Bridge; and other historic documentation projects.  These archival responsibilities include support in collection rotation and exhibit support for the WESTRAY Photographic Showroom.  Responsible for facilitation and records management for the WESTRAY Foundation Board of Directors.

 

2003-Present:  Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum (BSHCM)

Directed the processing of the Tri-State Mining Archival Collection including map conservation, photographic conservation, small manuscripts processing, data base design and management, creation of patron finding aids/guides (2003).  Continue to support BSHCM on special projects and museum development consultation.

 

2004-2006:  “Bridge to a New Frontier:  Cape Girardeau, Missouri” Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibit Proposal

Provided leadership in a community volunteer effort to document and promote the entrepreneurial and visionary history of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Designed a workbook for the project, participated on the design and research team , and served as liaison with the Smithsonian staff.  Spearheaded the team writing of an abstract for the project. 

 

2001-2003:  Southeast Missouri State University, Special Collections and                 Archives, Kent Library

Coordinated patron services, supervised student archivists, designed exhibits, implemented exhibit plans, processed photographic collections, processed rare document and small manuscripts collections, assisted the director in program development, assisted researchers, participated in a data base repair project, and developed patron finding aids.

 

2003:  Mississippi River Bridge Papers Exhibit, Kent Library, Southeast Missouri State University

Directed the exhibit design, and implementation of the Harrington and Cortelyou Mississippi River Bridge Papers opening exhibit.  Created loan agreements, directed the exhibit team, directed the organization of the event.

 

2002:  Bauer-Dysart Photographic Collection, Sikeston, Missouri Depot Museum

Team leader for an archival group that designed a processing plan, volunteer training materials, and a database for a collection of 20,000 photographs and negatives.

CL Jordan/Chief Ray Golden, funded $304,000. for restoration of the heritage center headquarters building.

 Kansas Historic Route 66 Grant, National Parks Service

Summer 2006

CL Jordan Preservation/Baxter Springs Heritage Center & Museum, funded $44,798.40.  To provide exterior restoration and a new heating and air conditioning system for the historic Phillips 66 Station which will serve as a local “visitors center” for Baxter Springs, Kansas.  The building is a National Register of Historic Places listed property.

 Kansas Historic Route 66 Grant, National Parks Service

Summer 2005

CL Jordan Preservation/WESTRAY Foundation, funded, $24,607.  To provide preservation maintenance on the Brush Creek Marsh Arch Bridge on historic Route 66.  The bridge is a National Register of Historic Places listed property.

 Kansas Humanities Council Grant

2003-2004

Carla Jordan and Phyllis Abbott, funded, $6,000.  The grant was written and funded to process the Tri-State Mining Archival collection for the Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum.

 State of Oklahoma

1993-1994

Ellen Wilks and Carla Jordan, funded, $247,000.  Coauthored the B.E.S.T. Child Care Program grant to provide special education services for an early childhood educational environment for children with disabilities. 

 The Harbors, Miami, Oklahoma

August 2005-Present

Provided grant writing and fund raising services to a homeless shelter in Miami, Oklahoma, that provides housing, employment, medical, and counseling services for the region. 

 Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation “Showcase” Chairperson

Participation 2000-2004

In 2004, Chaired the “Showcase” fundraising event under the direction of the hospital foundation in order to provide funds for nursing college tuition and charity care.

Team member in developing the Anderson-Bailey House Museum and Archives in Commerce, MO.  Providing mentoring, National Register of Historic Places documentation, research assistance, archival support, and preservation planning.

 Mickey Mantle Museum Trust

Spring 2005

Provided leadership development, program planning, and mentoring to the Mickey Mantle Memorial Trustees.  The trust is a not-for-profit organization created to build a museum complex in Commerce, Missouri, to honor the career of Mickey Mantle.  CL Jordan Preservation conducted a retreat for the Mantle Trust in April, 2005.
