Please check out our Smithsonian Magazine-Museum Day website they have established for us.  It is superb!  http://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/venues/Lutheran_Heritage_Center_Museum_of_the_Perry_County_Lutheran_Historical_Society.html#

What a bustling and wonderful day we had here.  Conferences plans are booming with a nearly full conference participation roster.  I worked with the Hospitality Committee on the continental breakfast plans, and all of the other food/refreshment plans.  What a group group of women I have working with me on this committee:  Evelyn Meyr, Gladys Engert, Florence Gruenwald, Betty Weber, and Doris Weber.

We are working with an Eagle Scout candidate on the restoration project for the Log College Seminary.  I believe in the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, and it is a wonderful opportunity for us to have their help.  If you see some young people camping in our Trinity Church Park, that is what is going on.

A special thanks to Delbert and Dolores Schmidt for holding down the museum responsibilities today.  Dolores mopped the visitor center floors and cleaned the restrooms--THANKS!
When most museums in the country are written about in reviews or in surveys, "cleanliness" is a key indicator of a patron's happiness at the site.

I worked on designing polo shirts for the conference today.  Our staff is also in need of new shirts.  The last time we bought them as a group was at our dedication 5 years ago.  Mine is too big, and many are faded.  We are all a bit sentimental about them, however.  I think navy blue will be our new color.  We will also have some to sell at the conference.

I'm working on procurring a screen for the conference presentations.  It is a pet peeve of mine to go to a conference and not be able to see the video presentation of the presenter.  We are going to rent a BIG one.

Take Care,
Carla Jordan

August is almost gone, and our September plans are booming.  I'm looking forward to meetings with the wineries this week, as well as a planning meeting with our wonderful hospitality committee.  We are going to plan the continental breakfast for Thur.-Sat. mornings of the conference, as well as some special receptions during the conference.

I have gone to a DELIGHTFUL family bistro the past two weekends for lunch.  The name of the establishment is Hill Top Creations.  It is on Hwy. A--right as you go into New Hamburg, MO.  I will include a link.  Their salads, weekend specials, and sandwiches are "top drawer" and reasonably priced.  The landscape around the restaurant is lovely, and it will soon be cool enough to eat outside there.  It is worth the little drive from Cape/Altenburg to visit.

A special thanks to Bob & Diane Schmidt for holding down the museum responsibilities today.

We had a great advisory council meeting this morning, and started the day with an executive board meeting at 8:00am.  It was a nice way to start the day!

I felt some cooler breezes this morning and saw a flock of Canadian snow geese on my way to Altenburg.  Are these signs of cooler weather, or am I a wishful thinker?

We are diligently making plans for the Community Fair on September 24th & 25th.  We will be open from 10am-noon on the 24th, and all day on the 25th.  The 25th is also the Smithsonian Magazine's Museum Day.  This is our third year to participate, and this should be a great day for us.  We have fun plans in the works for a suprise float at the Fair Parade on the 24th.  It is always a spectacular gathering.  More to come...

We are having a better than expected response to the Immigration Conference (Oct. 28-31) registrations--so if you want to attend give me a call.  We will be putting a cap on participation soon.  We want to be able to professionally manage the group at this small site.  There will be some extra room for the banquet on Saturday Oct. 30.  To participate Sat. only in this wonderful evening we only require a $25./person reservation (needed immediately.)  The daily rate for the entire day is more--just give me a call if you have questions.

A special thanks to all of the staff who covered the museum this past weekend.  Things are booming for us, and I feel blessed.

Another ideal day at the museum.  I am so thankful to be here today.  I took a fall on Sunday and have been suffering a bit through a concussion, and I can tell you as the day progressed I started feeling much better (less headache) and I think that is a great sign.  Don't let anyone ever tell you that an ambulance ride is smooth--that was the roughest ride of my life, but they sure did help me.  A few more days of 1/2 speed and I should be doing well.

We had guests from Fort Wayne and Iowa today.  We made wonderful progress on our tax credits project, and worked on Zion Roots.  Del and Dolores worked with the Jahn family--an original immigration surname--over the weekend and they had a successful research time finding the info. they needed on their ancestors.  I'm so proud of our staff for diving in and familiarizing themselves with this wonderful research tool.

We have two wonderful additions to our giftshop.  The first is a beautiful book, Living Fire from the Forge as Delivered by the Blacksmith's Son.  It is a compilation of the sermons of Reverend E.T.J. Birner.  Pastor Birner was born in Wittenberg, MO., and his father was the local blacksmith.  It is a beautiful monograph, and worth a read.  The book was edited by the descendant of Pastor Birner, Alice K. Birner Bokenkamp.  The book sells for $12.50.

The second addition to our gift shop is a beautiful bisque tile of southeast Missouri artist, Jeanie Eddleman's Log College graphite drawing.  It is a lovely piece that can be used as a coaster, a trivet, or displayed in a frame or on an easel.  The tiles were created in Joplin, MO, by museum friend, Sam Sturgis.  The tiles sell for $10. each.

I talked with our dear friend, Mary Dillon, on the phone today, and her new Altenburg book is on schedule for an October 9-10 booksigning at the museum.  We are all excited to see the finished product, and we are proud of Mary for all of her diligent efforts and research.

A special thanks to everyone who covered for me during my travels last Thursday, and my recovery on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Thank you for your prayers and encouragements.

A special thanks to our crew for covering the museum this weekend, and to Carolyn Taylor for covering today.  I took a little spill on Sunday, and had a bumpy ambulance ride to find out that I have a doozy of a concussion and a bruised (not broken) hip.  One more day of rest for me, but hope to be back to the museum on Thursday.  I'm going to be just fine...

I have a lot of good news to share, more soon,
Carla Jordan

The Trinity Lutheran Church Confirmation Reunion was held in Altenburg today.  We had numerous visitors at the museum, and everyone seemed happy to reestablish ties with old friends and family. The museum was the popular and "cool" place to be.  We had a super day.

We have researchers coming to visit Zion Roots on Monday and Tuesday.  The Schirmers from the New York immigration group, and the Grebings from the New York immigration group have family members visiting the Reading Room.

We are pleased to add some lovely art pieces from artist, Jane Short.  She has added to our gift shop some Wunderkind floral dolls which are delightful!  She is also the maker of our beautiful paper German bells.  Thank you for all of your wonderful efforts, Jane.

We also had an addition of hummingbird, dove, and cross stained glass suncatchers from glass artist, Darlene Kiefer.  They are FANTASTIC, and a steal at only $10. each.

Have a wonderful week, stay cool, and plan a trip to see us!

I will be doing work in Kansas and Oklahoma on Thursday and Friday.  I'll be at the museum Tue-Wed this week.

I am amazed at who walks through our museum door in a day.  Kathy Berkbigler is on her second day of family research for her Fiehler Family and Palisch Family poster sessions at the October Immigration Conference.  It was wonderful to have this time with her.

My email friends, the Camp Family finally made it here from Munster, Ind. today, and it was great to spend time with them. A special thanks to Bob Schmidt for giving them a wonderful tour. They were troopers with this heat and started their day at the Trail of Tears State Park, then our Log College, Museum, and Trinity Church, with a finale tour at Saxon Lutheran Memorial.  I wish them safe travels.  Keep in touch!

The Fischers from Princeton, with their son John walked through the door today.  What a great reunion with old friends.

Stay as cool as you possibly can.  It was dangerously hot here today.

A special thanks to Caroline Littge and Arleen Schlichting for holding down the museum today.  I am excited that our dear museum friend, Kathy Palisch Berkbigler, will be coming for a Zion Roots research visit to the museum this week.

Hope all is well for our blog readers.  Get your reservations in for the Immigration Conference (Oct. 28-31.)  We are filling up very fast.

A special thanks to Gerard Fiehler for helping me hold down the museum today.

We had our last German Language Summer Club on Thursday.  Gerard and Erica Cooper were the leaders for the program, with more than 100 participation hours over the 8 week period.  The repeat participants are really beginning to speak the German language.  I'm proud of all of you, and hope you will join us next year.  Thank you, Erica!

The McGahan Family (Don, Linda, & Juanita) were here from Arkansas last Thur.  They are related to the Mueller Family and Goecke Family in Wittenberg, MO.  They enjoyed working with the Zion Roots Collection.  I pray they had a safe journey home, and we will eagerly await their return in October.

A group showed up on Friday that we were very happy to see.  Last week we had folks from New Hampshire, more Arkansas folks, and Ohio.  Yipee!  We had made so many new friends this summer.

Autumn is our busy time, and late July used to be a little slow.  I'm SO happy this has changed.  All the glory to God!
Take Care,
Carla Jordan
